Mike's Story
Our dear friend Mike suffered a traumatic brain injury on the 6th of April 2006. As he was driving, he was broadsided by a semi, he was hit and drug down the highway. This horrific accident left Mike with a Traumatic Brain Injury, a broken neck, 9 broken teeth, fractured jaw, broken right shoulder, fractured many left ribs, broke left leg. As if this wasn't enough, he also suffered 2 collapsed lungs. In the closest trauma center, Bryant West, he clung to life. For 37 days he laid there in a coma. When he woke up and stabilized, he was then transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Center. He was a patient there for about 37 days. He spent a total of 4 and half months as an inpatient. Then he transferred to Quality living in Omaha for 35 days. After his stay there he went back to Madonna as an outpatient. Over the next 5 years he went through 28 surgeries and each time returning to outpatient therapy following each surgery. When he was at Quality Living, he was told that he would need to go to a nursing home when he left there. He was so determined to heal, he said there was no way he was going there. He would exercise early in the morning and late at night, before and after formal therapy. Leaving Quality Living he went to his brothers for 3 weeks and then back to Quality Living where they agreed he could live on his own. He went back to Lincoln and now works part time, volunteer part time at Madonna and helps his neighbors with their yards. He is such an inspiration to all with a brain injury. Quality living told him, "He would never work again" yet here he is. Mike reminds us, "If you never give up, there will always be a good result. You have to be in it for the long haul."
